House Size Is Not Roof Size
Why Roof Square Footage Can Differ From Living Square Footage
A 2,000-square-foot house does not automatically have a 2,000-square-foot roof.
Living area may be divided between multiple stories, while garages, porches and additions can increase the one-story footprint beneath the roof. Roof pitch, overhangs and architectural details also add surface area that is not reflected in the home's interior square footage.
Roofing contractors commonly measure projects in roofing squares. This industry measurement helps translate the total roof surface into material quantities, but the final order may also account for project-specific cuts, transitions and waste.
